I never get tired evangelizing about the importance of backups. I've learned it the hard way and not only lost my blog posts once but twice that's why you'll see in my archives that there's a gap between the first few months in 2006.

Anyways, you should also install WP DB Manager which I included in my recent blog update. It can backup, manage, optimize and repair your database right from your Wordpress panel. It can also Empty/Drop tables and even Run SQL queries. The most recent version can now do scheduled backups like what the WP Database backup does.

akismet is my best wordpress friend. Every now and then I'll get 2 or 3 spam comments stuck in my moderation queue but the rest get eaten by akismet.

I'm always logged into my wordpress admin so I go through and remove all spam comments directly after logging in and just before logging out for the night. It's a mixture of paranoia and not wanting to skim over a good comment mistakenly shoved in akismet due to a pileup.

There's also another akismet related plugin that I find useful. It's called htaskimet rules. You set some 'rules' and based on said rules certain recurring spam commenters are auto banned from your site. I think it does more but I haven't played with it since I first set it up *blush*

Thanks for spreading the 'back up and back up OFTEN" message :D I'm glad I was able to help you out and relieved that the database repair worked in your case :)

And thanks for the huge compliment . . I'm not so sure about the 'guru' label -- but, I'm flatterd!
