The only thing I have to add: You MUST read his graphic novels. His books are good and all but it’s HIS graphic novels that are truly essential.

I haven’t had time to watch the movie & it looks to me that I’ll never be able to watch it on the big screen (seeing as G4 is the only theater I’m comfortable at – no, not after the bombing incident). Anywho – this is a GREAT theme!

I like Gaiman’s brand of fantasy over, uh, the likes of LOTR. Following that logic, Stardust the movie creams the LOTR trilogy. :)

Anyway, I think you shouldn’t worry too much about whether you should have read the book before the movie because in all probability you’ll enjoy both. And watch/read it over and over again. But I totally understand if you don’t want a movie version to destroy the curling-up-with-a-book experience. Hee.
